Women’s soccer team pushes regional unbeaten streak to 74 consecutive games
This year’s Hill College women’s soccer team has helped push the program’s Region 5 unbeaten streak to 74 consecutive games as it prepares to face Cisco College in the final conference game of the season.
Hill College Head Coach Paul Davenport said although he’s pleased with the team’s performance so far this season, there’s always room for improvement.
“We are one of only six undefeated teams left in the nation,” Davenport said. “Also, both Navarro College and Hill College are the only teams to have Top 5 wins this season.”
Hill College (currently ranked No. 8 in the country) defeated No. 4 Tyler Junior College, 1-0, Sept. 10 in Tyler giving the Apaches their only loss so far this season. The Rebels also tied No. 6 Butler Community College Sept. 25 in El Dorado, Kansas.
“The win over Tyler was very important for the record books as it was Tyler’s first home loss in the regular season since 2015,” Davenport said. “It was also the first back-to-back wins we’ve had against them dating back to last year’s District Championship.”
Davenport also said although he has felt the team has yet to put a solid performance together, to be undefeated is still impressive.
“The draw against Ranger last week was very timely as we prepared for the final playoff push,” he added, “and it showcased to us a desire to reset mentally and focus on some details that were starting to get overlooked during the undefeated run. We do not have to be perfect, but we need to be consistently grinding.”
Hill College is currently 8-0-3 this season. The three ties were against Rose State College (No. 15 in the nation), Butler Community College – Kansas (No. 6 in the nation), and Ranger College.
Following Friday’s conference finale against Cisco College, as well as a non-conference game against Jacksonville College on Oct. 15, Hill College will be facing Ranger College in the Region 5 Championship Oct. 23 at Gateway Park in Fort Worth beginning at 3 p.m.
"The team understands the importance of what is to come with the Region 5 Championship game versus Ranger and maintains the focus on one game at a time while not looking too far ahead,” Davenport said. “This is the fourth year in a row we will play Ranger in the Championship game. Regardless of what has happened each year during the regular season, it is always a difficult game as Ranger plays with their own belief and desire to make their own history.”
Hill College currently leads the region with 42 goals scored and is tied with Ranger College with 6 goals against.
