Hill College women’s basketball team ‘loaded’ with freshmen talent
Hill College Head Women’s Basketball Coach Antreanna Brooks is bringing a “loaded freshmen” team to the court during the 2024-25 season as the Rebels look to build off last year’s momentum.
The Rebels, who finished 16-14 (8-8) last season, narrowly missed the playoffs. They are going into this season currently ranked No. 4 in the North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference preseason poll.
“We are ‘freshmen loaded’ this season,” Brooks said, “but they all bring extreme athleticism and a hunger to win. They are still figuring out the college pace, and adjusting to our system, but they are really good.”
Journee Chambers and Precious Jackson-Sanders are the only two sophomores on this year’s 12-person roster.
“Journee is the only returner from last year’s team,” Brooks said. “With everything we went through last season, it has made her become more driven and determined to win and has put her in a great position to lead this team through both her playing experience as well as knowledge of the conference.”
Brooks brought in Jackson-Sanders as a transfer forward and said she has already shown amazing growth since the first workout and should also be a rebounding force and great on the block.
“Both sophomores did not have the seasons they wanted last year,” Brooks added, “and they have come in hungry and ready to work.”
Brooks said she is also very pleased to have Assistant Coach Tamia Hewitt by her side again this season. This is Hewitt’s second season at Hill College.
“Coach Hewitt returning for a second season has been huge, and I am super thankful for her and everything she does for our program,” Brooks said. “She is constantly and consistently putting in extra work with the players. She knows what our system is and implements it with the players, and she also holds them accountable in practice.”
Although Hill College has been playing in a handful of scrimmages over the past couple of weeks, the season officially begins Nov. 1 as the Rebels host Western Gulf Collegiate beginning at 2 p.m. in the newly renovated Bob Bullock Sports Center.
“The upgrades to the gymnasium have been wonderful,” Brooks said. “They have also brought new energy to the team, and I think should also improve within the recruiting process.”
Although many areas of the Bob Bullock Sports Center were renovated, some of the major items included a new gym floor, new scoreboards, and overhauled locker room facilities.
Besides two teams in the conference receiving preseason Top 25 national rankings (No. 12 Collin County Community College; and No. 23 McLennan Community College), Brooks has also scheduled three additional national powerhouse non-conference opponents – No. 8 Odessa College; No. 15 Trinity Valley Community College; and No. 18 Blinn College.
