Men's basketball team bids farewell to 11 sophomores
Although the Hill College men’s basketball 2023-24 season didn’t turn out like Head Coach Swede Trenkle and his student-athletes had hoped it would, the Rebels still managed to win four North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference games along with a 13-16 overall record.
Although the Hill College men’s basketball 2023-24 season didn’t turn out like Head Coach Swede Trenkle and his student-athletes had hoped it would, the Rebels still managed to win four North Texas Junior College Athletic Conference games along with a 13-16 overall record.
Sophomore forward Cameron Estill (Raytown, Missouri) led the conference in rebounds with 11.2 per game; sophomore teammate Benjamin Ezeagu (Toronto, Canada) finished third in conference in field goal percentage (63.2 percent); and sophomore guard Solomon Kuol (Melbourne, Australia) tied for eighth in three-point percentage (39.1 percent).
“We had an up and down season,” Trenkle said, “but we really liked the players and how hard they worked on a daily basis. Even though the games were tough at times, they kept a great attitude and work ethic.”
The Rebels went 9-8 at home this season but only boasted a record of 2-6 on the road.
“For the most part, we played ourselves into a chance to win every game except a couple,” Trenkle added. “Road games are always hard to win, we just struggled to make baskets consistently.”
On another positive note, three Hill College student-athletes received All-Conference accolades.
Sophomore guard Gob Gob (Manchester, N.H.) was named to the All-Conference Team; and both Estill and Ezeagu were Honorable Mentions.
“These three players had very good individual seasons,” Trenkle said. “All three of them will have great careers at their next schools.”
Trenkle had 11 sophomores on this year’s team (five having played at Hill College both years), and he said all of them were fantastic young men and were fun to be around every day.
This summer, the Bob Bullock Sports Center will undergo some much-needed renovations – including a new gym floor and locker room enhancements.
“All the improvements to the facility will help tremendously in our recruiting athletes to our school,” Trenkle added. “We will be able to brag about our facilities around the country, and we are very excited to get into our new and improved facility next school year.”
